Hikari Tsuzuraori: A Unique Vacation Home in Kamakura

An Architectural Escape from the City

Nestled near the iconic Great Buddha and Hase Temple in Kamakura, the "Hikari Tsuzuraori" (meaning "Meandering Light") stands as a testament to the vision of renowned designer Hironari Itoi. This residential house, designed as a vacation home, offers a serene and out-of-the-ordinary atmosphere for its inhabitants.

Located in close proximity to bustling tourist attractions, the Hikari Tsuzuraori provides a stark contrast between the lively daytime atmosphere and the tranquil silence that envelops the area after sunset. The lower floor of the house, where natural light is scarce, has been transformed into a Japanese-style space that embraces the darkness, offering a meditative retreat from the city's hustle and bustle. On the upper floor, a sense of movement and change is celebrated, creating a joyful space for the family to experience the ever-changing nature of time.

To overcome the challenge of limited natural light due to neighboring homes, the design of the Hikari Tsuzuraori incorporates four staggered cores, creating a miniature garden and allowing sunlight to permeate the interior. The roof slope is strategically folded, forming an aperture at the top of the building that welcomes the active sunlight during the day and offers a serene view of the starry sky at night.

With a total floor area of 139.33 square meters and a building area of 78.97 square meters, the Hikari Tsuzuraori stands as a two-story residential house. Its unique design and use of skylights make it a standout example of Japanese architecture, blending traditional elements with modern innovation.

Privacy was a key consideration in the design of this vacation home. While the structure is closed off from its surroundings, the interior features an open design, creating a sense of spaciousness and connection. The Hikari Tsuzuraori offers a harmonious balance between opposing themes, such as light and dark, Western and Japanese influences, providing a truly unique and unforgettable experience for its occupants.

The design process for the Hikari Tsuzuraori began in May 2017 and was completed in March 2018, with construction taking place from May 2018 to January 2019. Situated in Kamakura-city, Kanagawa, Japan, this vacation home is a testament to the harmonious integration of architecture and nature.

The Hikari Tsuzuraori has received recognition for its exceptional design, winning the Bronze A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building, and Structure Design category in 2022. This prestigious award celebrates designs that exhibit creativity, resourcefulness, and technical excellence, contributing to the improvement of quality of life.
